I'm sure you've wondered at some point why we're here.
Why we came into this world.
Many philosophies tell us we're here to learn and experience as much as we can.
Some people don't even want to learn to ride a bike. Others feel they're wasting their time if they haven't tried every sport going.
The truth is that discovering and taking on new experiences, tools and skills gives you a more exciting way to approach life.
And languages are one of the few things that, once they're in, nobody can take away from you.
The surveyor who ended up running a hotel in New Zealand
A few years ago, a good friend of mine was stuck in Madrid.
The crisis had hit his sector hard. He was a surveyor. He had to go back to his old job pulling pints near the Bernabéu.
The good news was that he had a girlfriend from New Zealand. And she wanted to go back home the following year.
My friend didn't think twice.
He decided to cross oceans.
In recent years he'd done little to improve his English. And since his girlfriend spoke Spanish, she hadn't helped him raise his level either.
A month before the flight, his girlfriend decided the relationship was over.
His world fell apart.
But he still wanted the adventure.
They agreed that he'd stay a couple of months with her family. Once he found work, he'd go his own way.
With low-level English and a surveying market that was saturated locally, he started out cleaning toilets in a hotel.
Without thinking it beneath him.
He persevered with his work and with the language, through language coaching, session by session. A few years later he was managing a hotel in Paihia, a tourist area in the north of New Zealand.
What that story says about languages
You may not be thinking of leaving everything behind to move to another country.
But you never know what might happen.
Learning a language well isn't preparing for something specific. It's preparing for whatever comes.
The surveyor didn't know he'd end up running a hotel on the other side of the world. He knew he wanted to go.
The language did the rest.
Frequently asked questions about learning a language to work abroad
Can you learn English from a low level to work in another country?
Yes. The Paihia story is exactly that. With consistency, real practice and personalised support, your level rises even from a low starting point. How long it takes depends on the intensity and frequency of the sessions.
Does language coaching work for people who haven't studied in a long time?
That's precisely who it's for. The method adapts to each person's starting point and specific goals, no matter how long it's been since they last used the language.
Are sessions online or in person?
Both options are available. For people in the middle of a move, or already living in another country, the online format lets you carry on learning without interruption.
