According to InterNations’ Expat Insider 2026 survey, the city is the global number one for expat happiness: 86% of people are happy with life here, against 70% worldwide. More than four in ten say they’re completely happy. Over half plan to stay for good.

The reasons aren’t a mystery. Nine in ten praise the climate. The cost of living feels fair. You can cross the old town on foot without a second thought. People arrive chasing a better quality of life, and Málaga hands it over.

So where’s the catch?

In two places. And both come down to the same thing.

The two things Málaga won’t hand you

The survey is honest about the city’s weak spots.

The first is bureaucracy. A third of expats worried about it before moving, and 57% find it genuinely hard to deal with local authorities, against 39% globally. Anyone who has waited on a cita previa for extranjería, fought with the padrón, or sat across from a clerk at the Seguridad Social knows the feeling.

The second is work. Málaga sits near the bottom for career prospects. Only a third of expats feel their professional life got better after the move.

Look at what the two have in common. A civil servant who won’t switch to English. An interview that runs entirely in Spanish. A lease, a contract, a tax form. The wall isn’t the weather or the prices. It’s the language.

A whole city you can’t reach without the language

But paperwork and payslips are the small prize.

Málaga is Picasso’s birthplace: you can visit the house where he was born on Plaza de la Merced, then walk the rooms of the Museo Picasso Málaga. It’s a Roman theatre sitting under a Moorish fortress, a port the Phoenicians founded nearly three thousand years ago, Holy Week processions that stop the whole city, a feria that doesn’t sleep for a week.

And it’s El Pimpi, the bodega on Calle Granada pouring wine since 1971, its barrels signed, its walls papered with the faces of everyone who ever passed through. Sit there long enough and you’ll hear the real Málaga: fast, warm, full of half-swallowed syllables and jokes that don’t survive translation.

That’s the part no guidebook hands you. The language is the key to the museum wall text, to the lyrics of a saeta sung from a balcony, to a García Lorca verse that loses its spine in English, to the punchline at the next table that makes everyone laugh but you.

Culture isn’t the monuments. It’s the conversation around them. And that conversation has a language.

Not a classroom. A coach.

Here’s the trouble with the usual route. Grammar apps and academy courses teach you to pass exercises, not to hold your own at a counter, in a meeting, or over dinner when it actually matters.

That’s where language coaching is different. At Learndix, with our team on the ground in Málaga, there’s no fixed syllabus. We start from what you actually face: the appointment next week, the interview next month, the nerve to stop nodding along and start taking part.

Real situations, native coaches, a plan built around your life here, not a textbook’s.

Málaga already gave you the weather and the lifestyle. Spanish is what makes the rest of it yours, from the town hall to the Picasso on the wall.

Ready to feel at home here? Discover our language coaching.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to speak Spanish to live in Málaga?

You can get by in English in tourist areas and some expat circles, but not for the things that matter: paperwork, healthcare, work, and real friendships. For everyday life beyond the beach, Spanish is essential.

Is bureaucracy really that hard for expats in Málaga?

It’s the city’s biggest pain point. In InterNations’ Expat Insider 2026 survey, 57% of expats said they find it hard to deal with local authorities, against 39% globally. Most of that difficulty disappears once you can handle appointments and forms in Spanish.

What’s the best way to learn Spanish in Málaga?

Language coaching beats generic classes and apps for adults with a real deadline. Instead of a fixed syllabus, a coach builds around your actual situations (an interview, a town-hall appointment, a negotiation) with native speakers and live practice.

Is Málaga a good place for expats?

Yes. In InterNations’ Expat Insider 2026 survey it ranks 3rd out of 33 cities overall and first in the world for expat happiness, with 86% happy with life there. Its weak spots are the local job market and bureaucracy, both of which become far easier with the language.

Source: InterNations, Expat Insider 2026.

Málaga is the world’s happiest city for expats, yet bureaucracy and work remain hurdles.
