How could someone so clumsy learn Spanish? Anyway, let him tell you himself what happened:
Antti never thought learning Spanish would change his life.
Like any self-respecting Finn, he got by fine in English, and in Fuengirola you can even chat to the woman at the bakery in Finnish without getting funny looks.
But he realised he was doing exactly what he did back in Kotka: working, going to karaoke, playing hockey (without the ice, of course), even having a nice cold Karhu.
Then there was his neighbour María, who was gorgeous. She always said hello, but he could only reply with a shy «Hola» or «Buenos días»; he couldn't say anything more.
The worst moment came when he decided to learn a bit more Spanish, and asked his friend Mikko (who spoke it perfectly) for a nice phrase to say to his neighbour.
But that swine Mikko could only think of teaching him something outrageous.
The next morning he ran into his neighbour and said:
«Good morning, María, your bum is like a whale's».
Without a second thought, María slapped him so hard he ended up facing Helsinki, and called Antti every name under the sun.
Poor Antti walked off without knowing what had happened. The only thing he was sure of was that he was going to punch that bastard Mikko.
After giving him a black eye as dark as liquorice, Mikko apologised and offered the only possible solution:
– Ditch Duolingo and learn to speak with native teachers and, if you want to impress your neighbour and live life to the full in Spain, shift your whale-sized backside! –.
Antti signed up for classes with the best teachers at Learndix.com and a few months later he invited María (this time, in good Spanish) for a nice cold beer and explained what had happened.
I'd love to tell you they got married, had seven children and lived happily ever after…
But no.
What actually happened was that Antti tried to kiss María (the lad liked a risk). She pulled away and very nearly slapped him again.
She wasn't upset, and replied:
– Antti, darling… I've got a boyfriend! But now that you're speaking Spanish, come and meet my friends; there are lots of them, and they're very pretty –.
Thanks to his neighbour, but above all to his Spanish, he got to know lots of wonderful people up close, really live the Spanish way of life and enjoy a thousand adventures on the Costa del Sol and all over Spain.
